Rust Systems Development Intern
Overview
We are looking for a technically curious Rust Systems Development Intern to assist with the development of fast, secure, memory-safe, and reliable software components.
This internship is suitable for students, recent graduates, and developers who understand basic programming concepts and want practical experience with Rust, systems programming, backend services, networking tools, command-line applications, and performance-sensitive software.
The selected intern will collaborate with systems engineers, backend developers, infrastructure team members, and quality assurance testers while learning professional software-development practices.
Description
As a Rust Systems Development Intern, you will help build and maintain software using Rust’s ownership model, type system, memory-safety features, and concurrency capabilities.
Your work may include developing application modules, backend services, command-line tools, network utilities, data-processing components, internal tools, and performance-focused applications.
You may also assist with testing, debugging, profiling, documentation, packaging, deployment, and maintenance of Rust-based systems.
You will receive technical guidance and code-review feedback while gaining practical experience with Rust development and systems-engineering concepts.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain software components using Rust.
- Implement features based on technical specifications and project requirements.
- Build command-line tools, backend services, utilities, or data-processing applications.
- Write clean, modular, reusable, and maintainable Rust code.
- Work with Rust structures, enums, traits, generics, modules, and pattern matching.
- Apply Rust ownership and borrowing concepts correctly.
- Learn and apply lifetime concepts where required.
- Assist with asynchronous and concurrent application development.
- Work with file systems, APIs, networks, and structured data.
- Create and maintain unit tests and integration tests.
- Assist with basic performance and benchmark testing.
- Identify, reproduce, investigate, and resolve software defects.
- Review compiler warnings, logs, panic messages, and error reports.
- Improve the performance and stability of existing components.
- Assist with improving memory and resource efficiency.
- Implement appropriate error handling using Rust error-management patterns.
- Research Rust libraries and recommend suitable technical solutions.
- Create and maintain technical documentation.
- Use Cargo to build, test, and manage Rust projects.
- Use Git for branches, commits, pull requests, and code collaboration.
- Participate in code reviews and technical discussions.
- Collaborate with QA testers to reproduce and resolve defects.
- Assist with software packaging, deployment, and maintenance.
- Follow secure coding and software-engineering best practices.
- Provide regular progress updates about assigned tasks.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree, diploma, certification, or training programme in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics, or a related field.
- Basic programming knowledge in Rust or another language such as C, C++, Python, Go, or Java.
- Understanding of variables, functions, loops, conditions, and data structures.
- Basic understanding of modular or object-oriented programming concepts.
- Strong interest in Rust and systems programming.
- Basic understanding of memory, processes, files, and operating-system concepts.
- Ability to understand technical documentation and project requirements.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Willingness to learn Rust ownership, borrowing, and lifetime concepts.

- Basic experience using Git, GitHub, or GitLab.
- Familiarity with Docker or containerised applications.
- Awareness of memory safety, thread safety, and secure programming.
- Experience working on academic, personal, or open-source Rust projects.
- A GitHub profile containing Rust, C, C++, or systems-programming projects is an advantage.
